Scriptures to consider before donating monetarily
We don’t pass an offering plate here at First Century Church. Instead, offering boxes are available at the exit doors.
The book of Matthew, and Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians chapter 9 speak about giving and the principles of freewill giving. See below for a few Scriptures that shed light on this subject.
Matthew 6:19–21
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
2 Corinthians 9:6
“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”
2 Corinthians 9:7
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
2 Corinthians 9:8
“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
We at First Century Church recommend seeking God's direction often concerning giving to any ministry. This will make sure you are current with your responsibility of storing up your treasures in heaven and not on the earth.
Frequency: 1 Corinthians 16:2 "On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made." This established a regular, weekly rhythm for financial stewardship.
Individual Responsibility: "Each one of you". The responsibility to give fell on every individual member, rather than relying on a few wealthy donors.
Proportionality: "...in keeping with your income" (or "as he may prosper"). Contributions were meant to be a reflection of what each person felt led to give.
Preparation: "...so that when I come no collections will have to be made". It prevented a rushed, disorganized, or manipulative fundraising drive upon the apostle's arrival.
